BJP’s 12-hour Bengali bandh, Mamata govt orders all employees to attend office

Bengal Bandh: The West Bengal government on Tuesday urged the people of the state not to participate in the 12-hour general strike called by the Bharatiya Janata Party on August 28 and said the administration will ensure that normal life is not affected due to the bandh. The BJP has called for a general strike in West Bengal from 6 am to 6 pm on Wednesday against the police action against people who took part in the march to the state secretariat here on Tuesday.

State government will not allow normal life to be affected

Alapan Bandopadhyay, principal adviser to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said the government will not allow any bandh on Wednesday. We appeal to people not to participate in this. The government will take all necessary measures to ensure that normal life is not affected. He said transport services will function normally and shops, markets and other commercial establishments have been asked to remain open.

State government employees were also instructed to take up their posts.

Bandopadhyay also asked state government employees to come to the office. They reached ‘Nabanna’ on Tuesday demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation in protest against the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They used batons, tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters who tried to disperse.
