Spain’s cricket team beats Greece and sets a new record in men’s T20I

On Sunday (August 25), the Spain men’s national cricket team defeated Greece in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup European Sub-Regional Qualifier Group C match held at Port Soif.

Greece were restricted to batting first at 96/9 as Yasir Ali took 3 wickets. Ali was backed by Mohammad Atif and Charlie Rumistrzewicz who took 2 wickets each.

The target of 97 proved easy for Spain as they reached home in 13 overs with 7 wickets to spare. Ali again played his part by scoring 25 off 30 deliveries, unbeaten. Ali was rightly adjudged Player of the Match.

Spain’s victory is significant as it allowed them to set a new record in men’s T20Is. It was the team’s 14th consecutive win and, with it, they now hold the record for the most consecutive wins in men’s T20Is.

Spain’s winning streak began in February 2023, when they defeated the Isle of Man. During this winning streak, Spain has defeated the Isle of Man four times, Jersey twice, Croatia in five consecutive matches and Cyprus, Czech Republic and Greece once each.

The previous record was held by Malaysia. Full member teams enjoying the longest winning streak in men’s T20Is include Afghanistan and India. Both teams have had a winning streak of 12 matches.
