Satish Kumar, an officer of the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Railway Board. This makes him the first Chairman and Managing Director from the Scheduled Castes in the history of the board, senior Railway Board officials said. He is currently posted as member of the Traction Rolling Stock. Kumar’s appointment comes as Jaya Varma Sinha, who is the current Chairman and Managing Director of the board, is set to retire on August 31 and Kumar’s appointment will be effective from September 1.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Shri Satish Kumar, Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), Member (Traction and Rolling Stock), Railway Board, to the post of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board,” a government order said. It further added that his appointment is in the top pay scale (pay grade 17 as per 7th Central Pay Commission).
Bureaucratic reorganization
Sinha took over as the Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board on September 1 last year, becoming the first woman to hold the post. Just two weeks ago, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved a slew of important bureaucratic appointments in various ministries. This leadership reshuffle involved new posts in key departments, including finance and defence.
