From Sumit Antil to Avani Lekhara, India’s top medal contenders for Paris 2024 Paralympics – India TV

The Paris Paralympic Games will kick off with the opening ceremony on August 28. Top athletes from around the world will be looking to give their best as the fight for glory is about to begin in the French capital.

India has sent its largest contingent of athletes, 84 of them in 12 sports. The country recorded its best record at the last Paralympics, when it won 19 medals. This time, the bar has been set higher.

Here are India’s top medal contenders for the 2024 Paralympics

Sumit Antil: Indian javelin throw champion Sumit Antil will be looking to defend his gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics in the F64 event. Sumit won gold at the last Paralympics when he broke the world record thrice. He is a two-time world champion in his event and also a world record holder with a throw of 73.29m in his category.

Miss Sheetal: Sheetal is the only active archer in the world competing in bare-arm archery. She is one of India’s top medal contenders. Sheetal won two gold medals at the 2022 Asian Para Games (Compound) in the mixed doubles and singles categories.

Avani Library: Shooter Avani Lekhara became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal, a feat she achieved at the Tokyo Paralympics in the women’s 10m air rifle R2 SH1 event. She is also the only Indian woman to have won multiple medals in a single edition of the Games, having also won a bronze in the 50m rifle R8 3 positions SH1. Avani is a strong medal contender for India.

Bhavinaben Patel: Bhavinaben Patel is another of India’s top medal contenders. She became the first Indian to win a Paralympic medal in table tennis, claiming a silver in the women’s singles 4 category at the previous Games. She won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and bronze a year later at the Asian Games.

Krishna Nagar: Badminton star Krishna Nagar is expected to defend his Tokyo gold in Paris. Krishna is the reigning world champion and will compete in the men’s singles SH6 category.

Yogesh Kathuniya: Tokyo Games silver medallist Yogesh is looking to add another medal to his list of achievements and, this time, improve the colour of the medal. He is competing in the men’s discus throw, category F56, and will be aiming for gold in Paris.
