Chiyaan Vikram says he wants to show ‘Thangalaan’ to his grandchildren

At a recent press conference in Mumbai, the ‘Thangalaan’ star Chiyaan Vikram Vikram spoke about his deep connection with the film and described it as one of the most memorable projects of his career. Sharing the stage with his co-star Parvathy Thiruvothu and director Pa Ranjith, Vikram reflected on the importance of the film in his life.

After a warm welcome from the Mumbai media at the press conference, Vikram said, “I have played some remarkable roles in my career but Thangalaan is super, super special for me. It is a film that I will always remember and show to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren if I am still here (laughs).”

Vikram had a fun interaction with one of the journalists when he was asked about his surprising transformation for ‘Thangalaan’. In a light-hearted moment, he joked, “It’s the money!” before seriously explaining, “I’m joking. I have also done films for free when I was less ambitious until my wife called me one day and said, ‘We need food on the table!'” Vikram shared.

A journalist claimed that he is often seen wearing a dhoti in the film. Vikram corrected her by saying, “It was a loincloth or a langot. I know a lot of people would balk or be a bit apprehensive about it, but I saw more than that (in this role). It was a big step for me. On the first day, we were all shy and kept doing that (pulling down the cloth). But when we realised that we were all dressed the same way, it became very cool.”

Talking about the clothes on ‘Thangalaan’, Vikram went on to describe how shooting for ‘Thangalaan’ was like stepping into a different era, explaining, “When an outsider would come on location, we would laugh at them. They would wear designer clothes and sunglasses to protect themselves from the sun. We would look at them strangely and wonder, ‘Why are they so stylish? Poor people! ‘ It’s not that (wearing the langot) is liberating. It’s a very beautiful thing. It was like stepping back in time in its purest form. I loved the way I looked and I really miss not wearing those clothes now.”

“It is very difficult for a film like this to reach a wide audience. I would like to thank my producers and Ranjith for the opportunity,” Vikram concluded.

‘Thangalaan’ has emerged as another cinematic extravaganza from the South, bringing to life the true story of the Kolar Goldfields (KGF) during the time of its discovery by the British. The film delves into how the British exploited and plundered these goldfields for their own purposes. With its unique concept, ‘Thangalaan’ continues the tradition of the South Indian film industry of offering audiences new and innovative narratives, standing out as yet another example of the South’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of the industry.

Directed by Pa. Ranjith, ‘Thangalaan’ was released in South Indian theatres on August 15 in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The film is slated for a nationwide Hindi release on September 6. ‘Thangalaan’ stars Chiyaan Vikram, Parvathy Thiruvothu and Malavika Mohanan in prominent roles. The film’s music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar.
