Nitin Gadkari’s highway plans could cause problems for airlines on these routes | India News

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is often called India’s ‘road man’ for his tireless efforts to improve Indian roads and connect cities, shared his ongoing plans and projects during the Zee News Conclave, which will significantly improve the travel experience of Indians. During the Conclave, Gadkari made a statement that could pose a challenge to domestic airlines, but also provided a solution to this potential problem.

On new highways between key cities, Gadkari said, “We are constructing a new highway from Dehradun to Delhi, which will be completed by December 2024. People are approaching me to enquire about the tunnel route that will connect Dehradun to Mussoorie so that they can buy houses there and settle down. They are willing to commute between Delhi and Mussoorie on a daily basis as the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun will be reduced to around two hours. When we completed the highway from Pune to Mumbai, eight flights were stopped between the two cities. After January 2025, flights from Delhi to Dehradun, Jaipur and Chandigarh are likely to be stopped due to better road connectivity.”

Gadkari explained that currently, flying to these three cities from Delhi takes around four hours, including the travel time from people’s homes and the waiting time at the airport. He noted that once these roads are operational, the same distance can be covered in just two hours by road, making it a more convenient option for travellers.

Asked if this would spell trouble for airlines due to possible flight cancellations, Gadkari said the government is building 100 new airports, which will provide additional business opportunities for airlines, ensuring that they do not suffer.

Asked about the expressway linking Delhi and Mumbai, Gadkari said work on the expressway is going on at full speed and the road is likely to be operational by January. “We are also making a connection to Jaipur from Delhi which will take around two hours,” Gadkari said.
