Houston:A student was shot and killed at Rice University in Houston on Tuesday, in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide.
Avila was found dead in her room after university police conducted a welfare check, after her family became concerned about not being able to reach her.
The suspected shooter, who was not a Rice student, was found dead in the same room, in what police believe to be a suicide at first glance.
Police have not yet released the identity of the shooter.
The victim, identified as Andrea Rodriguez Avila, 21, was a junior studying political science and law. She had recently transferred from the Community College of Baltimore County in the spring of 2024.
Ávila was actively involved on campus, serving as deputy parliamentarian for the Rice Student Association, peer academic advisor at Jones College, and member of the Honor Council.
According to Rice University Police Chief Clemente Rodriguez, Avila and the man were dating. A note found at the scene suggested their relationship was troubled.
University officials confirmed that Avila’s family arrived in Houston on Tuesday morning, the day after the incident. “The Avila family is receiving support from the university leadership team during this deeply difficult time,” a university spokesperson said. “They have requested privacy as they grieve their loss and deeply appreciate the outpouring of support and prayers from the community.”
