Veteran Indian batsman Virat Kohli has moved up two places to eighth while his captain Rohit Sharma has dropped one place to sixth in the latest ICC Test rankings released on Wednesday. Joining Rohit and Kohli in the top 10 is youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has moved up one place to seventh. Veteran English batsman Joe Root maintained his place as the world’s top-ranked Test batsman after his success in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Manchester. But Root’s teammate Harry Brook has made a huge jump thanks to scores of 56 and 32 during that encounter at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old has moved up three places to fourth in the rankings, overtaking Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Australia’s Steve Smith and Rohit. Babar has dropped a whopping six places to joint third to ninth place following a bizarre error in the first innings of Pakistan’s Test match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.
But teammate Mohammad Rizwan moved up seven places, reaching a new career-high ranking of moving into the top 10 in a shared 10th place following his century in the same match.
Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim achieved a career-high ranking, moving up seven spots to No. 17.
Experienced Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin continues to occupy the top spot among the bowlers, while pacer Jasprit Bumrah and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja have retained their third and seventh spots respectively.
England’s Chris Woakes, up four places to 16th, and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando (up 10 places to 17th) have both gained some ground, while Pakistan’s right-hander Naseem Shah (up four places to 33rd) and England’s Gus Atkinson (up four places to 42nd) have both posted career-best ratings following strong results in recent appearances.
Among the all-rounders, Jadeja and Ashwin continue to occupy the top two spots, while Axar Patel is ranked sixth.
