Kolkata Rape and Murder Case: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has responded to President Droupadi Murmu’s statement on the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital, questioning her silence on similar cases in other states, suggesting a lack of attention to such incidents in BJP-led regions.

A female junior doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital when she had gone to rest during her night shift in the early hours of August 9, prompting doctors to abandon their duty and hit the streets.

“Where were you when what happened in the BJP-led states happened?”

Kunal Ghosh said, “I heard Speaker Droupadi Murmu’s statement on RG Kar Hospital. She expressed her concern over it. I respect it. While we as a party support justice and advocate death penalty for the accused, we wonder why the Speaker is speaking out now. Where were you when similar incidents happened in Unnao, Hathras, Maharashtra, Badlapur and Uttarakhand? In the case of gold medallist Sakshi Malik’s allegations against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, where was the response then? But now that it has happened in Bengal, it is a social crime. But when it happened in BJP-led states, where were you then? We respect you. Don’t do this.”

President Murmu on rape and murder in Kolkata

Earlier in the day, President Murmu expressed her anguish over the horrific case of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, which has sparked incessant protests by doctors across the country. She said, “Shocked and horrified, enough is enough.”

Murmu asserted that no civilised society can allow daughters and sisters to be subjected to such atrocities. “The nation is bound to be outraged, and so am I,” she wrote. The hard-hitting and personalised piece, titled “Women’s Safety: Enough is Enough”, is the first time the President has expressed her views on the August 9 incident in Kolkata that has once again shaken the conscience of the nation and sparked widespread and ongoing protests.

“While students, doctors and citizens were protesting in Kolkata, criminals were still lurking elsewhere. No civilized society can allow daughters and sisters to be subjected to such atrocities.”

“Society needs honest and impartial introspection and asking some difficult questions,” she added. “Too often, a deplorable mindset sees women as inferior human beings, less powerful, less capable, less intelligent.”
