The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday suspended the membership of Dr Sandeep Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The move was taken amid the CBI probe into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The decision to suspend Ghosh as a member of the Kolkata chapter of the association was taken by the IMA’s disciplinary committee.
In an order issued on Wednesday, IMA said the committee formed by the organisation’s national president Dr RV Ashokan had conducted a suo motu inquiry into the rape and murder case of the post-graduate resident doctor and the subsequent developments at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Taking cognizance and considering it, it said IMA national president Ashokan along with other national-level IMA members had met the parents of the deceased doctor at their home.
The order read, “They have lodged complaints against you (Dr Ghosh) for your handling of the situation, and the parents have also stated that they were ill-treated at the hospital on the day of the incident. It also pointed out the lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue. The order issued by the IM said that along with the Bengal state branch of the IMA, some doctors’ associations have also demanded action citing the nature of defaming the entire profession by you (Dr Ghosh).
The order said that the Disciplinary Committee of IMA has decided to immediately suspend Dr Ghosh from membership of the Indian Medical Association. Earlier, in a letter written to the IMA, the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) had expressed concern over Dr Ghosh’s association with the organisation and demanded cancellation of his membership.
