Airtel to shut down Wynk Music, offer Apple Music at discounted prices

Indian telecom giant Airtel is shutting down its music streaming app, Wynk Music, a decade after its launch.

According to a PTI report, the company will shut down the app in the coming months and absorb all the employees into the Airtel ecosystem.

“We can confirm that we will be closing down Wynk Music and all Wynk Music employees will be absorbed into the Airtel ecosystem,” the company spokesperson said.

Airtel’s partnership with Apple

Development occurs shortly after the Jio’s rival has partnered with the iPhone manufacturer Apple offer exclusive Apple TV+ and Apple Music deals to its customers in India.

The partnership will enable Airtel Xstream customers to access Apple TV+ content on premium Airtel WiFi and Postpaid plans.

Additionally, users who are subscribed to Airtel’s music streaming service Wynk Premium will have access to exclusive offers on Apple Music. These offers will be available exclusively to Airtel customers in India later this year, the company said in a statement.

“We’re thrilled that Airtel customers in India will soon be able to enjoy all the amazing content on Apple TV+ and Apple Music,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Sports and Beats.

“With our ever-growing catalog of top-rated movies, TV shows and music to choose from, we know there will be something for everyone,” Schusser added.

Wynk Music’s presence in the market

The Wynk Music app, which was launched by Airtel in September 2014allows users to download music for offline listening, set ringtones, listen to podcasts, and stream music in multiple regional languages.

Currently, the app has an estimated number of subscribers of over 100 million.

Wynk Music reportedly contributes around Rs 300 crore in annual revenue for the parent company.

In August 2022, Wynk Music presented Wynk Studioa music distribution ecosystem for independent artists based in India and abroad.

The studio will enable artists to release their music and will also partner with them to monetize their music across a host of platforms and will be part of Airtel’s digital product portfolio which includes Wynk, Airtel Xstream, Airtel Ads, Airtel IQ, among others.
