Pranpur: India’s first artisanal tourist village
Known for its transparent texture, delicate patterns and vibrant colors, Chanderi Sarees have long been one of the most iconic family keepsakes for all fashion enthusiasts. This art of weaving has its origins in the 13th century and the tradition has been passed down through generations. And for most travellers, Chanderi sarees are synonymous with the city of Chanderi in India. Madhya Pradeshwhere the Chanderi Festival is also celebrated to highlight the history of this fabric. Only a few know that these saris are actually woven in Pranpura weaving village home to over 400 families, about 3 kilometres from Chanderi.
And in an effort to boost textile tourism in the state that has over 5000 years of textile traditions, the Tourism in Madhya Pradesh This year, the Board has made Pranpur India’s first handloom tourist village. The village’s centuries-old houses, adorned with fresh paint and floral designs, have been spruced up for travellers thanks to a recent renovation project spearheaded by design students from Ujjain. Most of the villagers are skilled weavers, who have been contributing to the production of this exquisite fabric for centuries, preserving the rich heritage of the craft. This special initiative allows tourists to visit the Pranpur weaving community, interact with the artisans, observe the weaving process and learn about the cultural significance of these textiles.
The village, located 110 kilometres from Jhansi, 35 kilometres from Lalitpur and 3 kilometres from Chanderi, is surrounded by hills, magnificent lakes and lush forests. Under the project, the old approach road to the village has been paved with local stones. Tourists can reach the village by car and park in the designated area. A café and public facilities, including a garden with an amphitheatre for local cultural performances, have been added. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board also has plans to open a Handloom Café in the village.

The nearest railway station to Pranpur is Lalitpur, while the nearest airport is Bhopal or Gwalior, both located around 220 km away.
