It’s been a while since then Babar Azam Babar played a match-winning innings for Pakistan. The star batsman’s lack of runs was one of the key reasons behind Pakistan’s shambolic performance across formats in recent times. The star batsman was expected to perform well during the home series against Bangladesh, however, he suffered back-to-back failures in the first Test. He was dismissed for a duck in the first innings before making just 22 in the second innings. The constant failures meant that Babar dropped to ninth place in the ICC Test rankings.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basil Ali feels Babar’s demotion to ninth spot is a blessing in disguise for the star batsman who will now be hungry to do well.
“The biggest news for me is that Babar Azam has dropped to No. 9 in the ICC rankings. This is very good for Babar Azam. His ranking should also drop in ODIs. He is not the No. 1 batsman in ODIs. Now Babar will be hungry. If he continues to not be hungry to play, it will hurt him a lot. The announcement of the ICC rankings before the second Test could be a blessing in disguise for Babar,” Ali said on his YouTube channel.
Ali simpleMeanwhile, Ali was not impressed with the PCB’s idea of playing the Champions Cup, an ODI tournament, after the Test series against Bangladesh, saying the board had copied the style of England, Australia and New Zealand. Ali said Pakistan should follow India’s example and host more red-ball tournaments.
“After the Test series, there will be a one-day tournament called the Champions Cup. Pakistan has copied the systems of England, Australia and New Zealand. India is right next to us, please copy their system too. It also requires intelligence to copy. Just copy what India is doing. The Duleep Trophy is about to start. Is it a T20 tournament or a one-day tournament? It is a four-day tournament. They are focused on strengthening their base, that’s why they are so successful,” he added.
