Abu Dhabi Crown Prince to meet PM Modi in India next month

He will discuss trade and bilateral agreements with Prime Minister Modi.

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed Bin Zayed AI Nahyan, heir apparent to the leadership of the United Arab Emirates (United Arab Emirates), is scheduled to visit India next month on September 8. The visit, aimed at strengthening trade and strategic ties between the two nations, will include meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top Indian leaders, according to reports on Wednesday.

Although no formal agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, both sides are expected to reaffirm their commitment to establishing closer and stronger ties in a range of sectors, including trade and security. The visit has not yet been officially announced by either country.

This visit follows a series of high-profile exchanges between India and the UAE in recent years. Prime Minister Modi has visited the UAE seven times since 2015. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, known as MBZ, last visited India in September 2023.

Crown Prince Khaled, who was named heir to the leadership of Abu Dhabi in March 2023, has made few international trips since assuming office. His visit to India is particularly significant given the UAE’s position as India’s third-largest trading partner after the United States and China, and its role as India’s second-largest export destination.

Since the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and the UAE in 2022, bilateral trade has increased and reached nearly $85 billion in FY2023. The UAE is also the seventh-largest investor in India, with cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows totalling $16.67 billion from April 2000 to September 2023.

Another key aspect of the relationship is the presence of 3.5 million Indian citizens in the UAE, who account for 30% of the country’s population and form the largest expatriate community in the country. Remittances from this community are a major source of foreign earnings for India.

The visit comes at a time of evolving dynamics in the West Asian region, where the UAE has played a pivotal role. In 2020, the UAE, together with Bahrain, normalized relations with Israel. At the same time, the UAE has maintained relations with Iran and strengthened ties with China and Russia.

Crown Prince Khaled’s visit to India is seen as a further step in consolidating the already strong bilateral relationship.
