Will BJP cancel tickets of half the MLAs in Haryana?

Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership will consider the names of candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections on Thursday, August 29. After the setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is now trying to sort out the social equations ahead of the assembly elections. BJP is also considering cancelling the tickets of nearly half of the sitting MLAs to counter the anti-incumbency wave. Apart from this, the party is also discussing the names of MPs who did not get tickets for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

According to sources, the BJP has decided to cancel the tickets of half of the sitting MLAs on the basis of its internal poll. The names of candidates for all the seats in Haryana will be discussed at the BJP Central Election Committee meeting to be held on the evening of August 29. The names of 50-60 candidates in the BJP’s first list are likely to be released. Former MP Sunita Duggal, who will not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is also expected to get the ticket. The BJP may also give tickets to around 6 leaders of other parties.

This time the Haryana Assembly elections are very important for the BJP. Being in power in the state for the last 10 years, the BJP is facing an anti-incumbency wave and along with it, there is also pressure to balance the social equations. The BJP formed the government in the state with absolute majority in 2014 and won all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the Lok Sabha elections held in the same year. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections too, the party won all 10 Lok Sabha seats but failed to secure a majority in the assembly elections. The BJP won only 40 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly and formed the government with the support of Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party (JJP 10 seats) and a few independent MLAs. However, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar remained the same.

To prevent polarisation of Jats in the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded former Congress minister and Chaudhary Bansilal’s daughter-in-law Kiran Chaudhary and her daughter Shruti. The BJP has also made Kiran a member of the Rajya Sabha, so that the Jat community does not get polarised towards the Congress. The JJP, which is contesting elections in the state along with the BJP and the Congress, has formed an alliance with Chandrashekhar Azad’s (Ravan) Azad Samaj Party.

The BJP has been following the policy of non-Jat polarisation for the last two elections, but this time the circumstances have changed. This strategy was not entirely successful in the Lok Sabha elections as Dalits and other communities supported the Congress. In such a situation, BJP is once again trying to woo the Jat community and keep the non-Jat communities united. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party has appointed Naib Singh Saini as the Chief Minister in place of Manohar Lal Khattar and also broke its alliance with the JJP.
