‘Bigger than most politicians…’: Mamata ‘congratulates’ Amit Shah on son Jay’s role in ICC | India News

In a subtle dig at Amit Shah, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday shared a post on X congratulating the Union Home Minister on the appointment of his son Jay Shah as the International Cricket Council (ICC) president. The post has created a ripple effect on social media not only because the Trinamool Congress chief addressed it to the Home Minister instead of directly congratulating Jay Shah on his appointment as the ICC chief, but also because she took a subtle dig at saying that Amit Shah’s son, despite not being a politician, has become more important than any politician.

“Congratulations Union Home Minister! Your son has not become a politician but has become the Chairman of the ICC, a much more important post than most politicians,” Chief Minister Banerjee wrote in X. “Your son has become very powerful indeed and I congratulate him on his highest achievement! Congratulations!” she added.

Political observers say it is difficult to tell from the language of the message whether it was a congratulatory note or a subtle dig at the Interior Minister.

On August 27, Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the next independent president of the International Cricket Council (ICC), replacing Greg Barclay. Shah, who has been serving as secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019 and president of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will take up the prestigious role on December 1.

Banerjee’s post is assuming significance as it comes at a time when the Banerjee-led West Bengal government is receiving flak from all corners, including top BJP leaders, over the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.

Earlier on Thursday, a Supreme Court lawyer filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against Banerjee for her “provocative” remarks in which she reportedly warned that other states could witness violence and unrest if trouble was created in Bengal.

Speaking at an event to mark the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the Trinamool Congress, Banerjee said on Wednesday: “Modi babu, you are trying to create unrest in Bengal through your people. But remember, if you burn Bengal, Assam, the Northeast, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Delhi will also burn.”

According to lawyer Vineet Jindal, the complainant, the Trinamool chief’s comments were inflammatory and had the potential to incite regional hatred and enmity, posing a threat to national harmony and law and order as a whole.
