Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a revered Hindu festival commemorating the birth of Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and prosperity. Celebrated with immense fervour across India, this festival has cultural, social and religious significance.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2024 Time: Shubh Muhurat and Tithi
According to Drik Panchang, the auspicious time to welcome Lord Ganesha home on Chaturthi Tithi will begin at 3:01 pm on September 6 and end at 5:37 pm on September 7.
The auspicious timing of muhurat puja will begin at 11:03 am and end at 1:34 pm on September 7, 2024.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: rituals and celebrations
In Hindu belief, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. He holds immense importance in Hinduism, and almost all rituals begin with his worship. Preparations for this festival begin months before, including the making of Ganesha idols.
Ganesh Chaturthi consists of four main rituals: Pranapratishtha, Shodashopachara, Uttarpuja and Visarjan puja. During this festival, people decorate their homes with flowers and Rangoli patterns and bring clay idols of Lord Ganesha to their residences. Also, elaborately decorated Ganesha idols are placed in puja pandals, homes, offices and educational institutions on the day of Chaturthi.
The Pranapratishtha ritual is performed by a priest who chants a specific mantra. This is followed by 16 distinct rituals, collectively known as Shodashopachara puja. Modak, a prized sweet pastry from Maharashtra, is believed to be the favourite offering of Lord Ganesh. During the puja, Modak, along with other sweets and fruits, is presented to Lord Ganesh.
People celebrate the festival by singing religious hymns, dancing to the beat of drums and preparing a delicious feast. The third important ritual of Ganesh Chaturthi is Uttarpuja, which involves bidding farewell to Lord Ganesh.
