Flame Models: Meta’s Flame Models Reach 350 Million Downloads and Lead the Open Source AI

GoalThe Llama AI model suite has become the fastest growing open source model family, achieving 350 million downloads globally. Hugging faceOf these, 20 million downloads were made last month alone, the company said.

In addition to the Hugging Face community platform, Llama was also accessed through Meta. cloud partners such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Databricks, Dell, Google Cloud, Groq, NVIDIA, IBM Watsonx, Scale AI, Snowflake, to name a few.

“Hosted Llama usage by token volume among our top cloud service provider partners more than doubled between May and July 2024, when we launched Llama 3.1,” Meta said in a blog post on Thursday.

Llama monthly usage (token volume) grew 10x between January and July 2024 for some of the largest cloud service providers.

“We have heard from several companies that want to be future LEAP and Llama integration partners, including WiproBrains and Lambda,” he added.

Industry leaders said the growing adoption of Llama meant Meta was closing the performance gap between open source models and the best proprietary models like OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude, etc.

“In the weeks since launch, thousands of Databricks customers have adopted Llama 3.1, making it our best-selling and most rapidly adopted open source model ever,” said Ali Ghodsi, CEO and co-founder of Databricks, in the same blog post. “This generation of Flame models “Llama 3.1 finally bridges the gap between OSS and commercial models in terms of quality. Llama 3.1 is a major step forward for customers who want to build high-quality AI applications, while retaining full control, customizability, and portability over their base LLM,” he said.

“Open source wins. Meta is building the foundation for an open ecosystem that rivals the best closed models and at Groq we put that directly into the hands of developers… We can’t add capacity fast enough for Llama. If we were to increase deployed capacity tenfold, it would be consumed in less than 36 hours,” said Jonathan Ross, founder and CEO of Elon Musk’s AI project Groq.

Meta said that with over 60,000 derived models on Hugging Face, there is a vibrant community of developers who are fine-tuning Llama for their own use cases. He shared some success stories of big companies like AT&T, DoorDash, Goldman Sachs, Shopify, and Zoom, etc., who are using Llama.

According to a survey by Artificial Analysis, an independent AI benchmarking site, Llama was the second most-regarded model and the industry leader in open source.
