The transfer of Vistara aircraft and crew to Air India will take place on November 12. The merger between Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, and Air India was announced in November 2022. Following the merger, Singapore Airlines will hold a 25.1 per cent stake in Tata Group-owned Air India.
The Indian government has approved foreign direct investment by Singapore Airlines as part of the merger. In a message to staff, Wilson detailed the steps being taken towards this final phase.
“For Vistara flights beginning November 12, flight numbers will change to Air India, although in almost all cases the aircraft, schedule and operating crew will not change until early 2025,” Wilson confirmed.
A set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) has been prepared to help passengers during the merger process. From September 3, passengers wishing to book flights departing on or after November 12 through Vistara’s website will be gradually redirected to Air India’s website to complete their bookings.
“All customers who have already booked Vistara flights after November 12 will automatically have their bookings converted to Air India flight numbers; this will happen in phases during September, and customers will be informed individually when this happens,” Wilson said. Wilson also mentioned that with regulatory approvals now confirmed, the date to move aircraft and crew from Vistara’s Air Operator Certificate to Air India’s has been set for November 12. “As we embark on the final stretch of this long and complicated process, let us maintain the focus and effort to ensure that our collective customers and colleagues experience the smoothest transition,” Wilson emphasised to the staff in his message.
The move marks a significant step in Vistara’s integration into Air India’s operations, with the promise of minimal disruption to customer service and operational schedules. The final transition is scheduled to be completed by early 2025, ensuring a seamless merger of the two airlines under the Air India brand.
