SpiceJet to temporarily suspend 150 cabin crew for three months

Cost-cutting measure: Amid financial woes, SpiceJet has decided to temporarily suspend 150 cabin crew members for three months. The budget carrier is operating with a reduced number of aircraft amid financial, legal and leasing issues. Currently, it has an operational fleet of around 22 aircraft.

A total of 150 cabin crew will be sent on unpaid leave for three months, an airline spokesman said on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, aviation regulator DGCA said the airline has been placed under heightened surveillance. “SpiceJet has taken the difficult decision to temporarily put 150 cabin crew members on leave for three months.

“This action has been taken in response to the current low travel season and reduced fleet size, with the long-term stability of the organization in mind,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

During this leave period, the spokesperson said the cabin crew members will continue to retain their status as SpiceJet employees, with all health benefits and earned leave intact.

The airline is seeking to raise funds to boost its finances.

“As we work to enhance our fleet following the upcoming Qualifying Institutional Placement (QIP), we look forward to welcoming our crew members back to active duty,” the spokesperson said.
