Kolkata rape-murder case: Vice President Dhankhar condemns incident, calls for severe punishment

Calcutta: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar described the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital as a “painful” incident, and stressed the need for a deterrent ecosystem to punish the perpetrators of such crimes. Dhankhar referred to the President Droupadi MurmuResponding to Dhankhar’s reaction on the matter, he reiterated his statement: “Enough is enough.”

Addressing students of Delhi University’s Bharti College at an event, Dhankhar said, “It is unfortunate to see the kind of fear that girls and women feel due to such incidents. President Murmu is a tribal woman. She has seen the reality on the ground. She rightly expressed in a press note that enough is enough with the crimes against women.”

Drawing parallels with the 2012 Delhi gangrape incident, Dhankhar stressed that recurring incidents require a robust ecosystem to punish the culprits and instill fear in them. She condemned those who justify such crimes as if they are happening regularly and expressed shock at their mindset.

Dhankhar also criticised “anti-national” narratives, identifying them as the biggest challenge to India’s development, and urged students to prioritise national interest over political and ideological differences.

The medical intern was allegedly raped and murdered in a seminar room at the hospital, where she had gone to rest during her night shift in the early hours of August 9.

Her body with serious injuries was found inside the salon by a doctor who was making rounds.

The main accused, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested the next day based on CCTV footage, in which he is seen entering the seminar hall at 4:03 am on the day of the incident.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered that the investigation be transferred from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which took over the case on August 14. The incident has triggered protests across the country.
