Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut She on Friday (August 30) said that her upcoming film ‘Emergency’, in which she plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has not been certified despite clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) due to “death threats” to members of the board. She said that ‘Emergency’ is still stuck with the censor board contrary to rumours that it has been cleared for release. The actress claimed that she and her team were being pressured not to depict the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and other events related to history.

“There are rumours that our film ‘Emergency’ has got the censor certificate. It is not true. In fact, our film was approved but its certification has been stopped due to various threats. Censor board members are also being threatened. We are being pressured not to show the assassination of Mrs (Indira) Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Punjab riots. I don’t know what we should show then. This is unbelievable for me and I feel sorry for the state of affairs in this country,” Kangana said in a self-made video on X.

Threats to Kangana Ranaut

Kangana’s comments came days after she received “beheading threats” from Sikh extremist groups following the release of the trailer of her upcoming film.

In the viral video, a Sikh extremist points out the assassination of Indira Gandhi and threatens Kangana. He says, “If he (Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale) is portrayed as a terrorist in the film, remember what happened to the person (Indira Gandhi) whose film you are making and that was Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. We will offer our head to Santji, and those who can offer their head can also cut others.”

It is noteworthy that Bhindrawale was a Khalistani militant who was killed in Operation Blue Star, after which Indira Gandhi’s bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh assassinated her on 31 October.

Controversy surrounding ‘Emergency’

On Friday, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) sent a legal notice to CBFC seeking to prevent the release of Ranaut’s film, alleging that it could “incite communal tensions” and “spread misinformation”. It claimed that the film’s trailer showed “erroneous historical facts that not only misrepresent the Sikh community but also promote hatred and social discord”.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also demanded a ban on Kangana’s directorial. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has criticised the film and said that Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who has been declared a martyr of the community by Akal Takht Sahib, has been made a bad figure in Emergency.
