Aarti ended India’s drought at the ongoing World Athletics U-20 Championships on Friday by securing a bronze medal in the 10,000m race walk.

Aarti put in a career-best effort to win the bronze medal. She broke her own national record and clocked a time of 44 minutes and 39.39 seconds to create history in the energy-intensive event.

Notably, the 17-year-old broke her own national record of 47:21.04 which she had set in March while winning a gold medal at the U-20 Federation Cup National Championships in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

While Aarti put in a commendable performance in the 10,000m race walk to bring laurels to the country, her best form still could not help her overtake the two Chinese athletes who bagged silver and gold respectively.

Zhuoma Baima clocked 43:26.60 to take the gold medal, while compatriot Meiling Chen clocked 44:30.67 to finish second in the gruelling event and secure silver.

It turned out to be a day that witnessed the rising prowess of Indian athletes, who broke multiple national records and rewrote the history books with impressive performances.

The four-member team comprising Ankul, Abiram Pramo, Rihan Chaudhary and Jay Kumar broke the national U-20 record in the heats of the men’s 4x400m relay with a record time of 3 minutes 08.10 seconds. The Indian quartet finished second in the third heat and qualified for the final round.

The team comprising Rujula Amol Bhonsle, Neole Anna Cornelio, Abinaya Rajarajan and Sudheeksha Vadluri also set a new national U-20 record by clocking 45.31 seconds on the clock in the heats of the women’s 4x400m relay. However, their best time was not enough as they failed to secure a place in the final round.

Earlier in the competition, Pooja Singh set a new national record for women’s under-20 high jump. She cleared the height of 1.83m to advance to the final round. Her event will be held on Saturday.
