IC 814 Kandahar Hijack, starring Vijay Varma in the lead role, is finally available on Netflix. The six-episode web series tells the story of the longest hijacking in Indian history and is based on a true story of an Indian passenger flight, which was hijacked by terrorists in December 1999. The web show is adapted from the book titled Flight into Fear: A Captain’s Story. The web show received mostly positive reviews from critics, however, it is also being criticized by a section of social media users citing its “pro-terrorist” and “anti-government” narrative. This is how Internet users criticize Netflix series
A user asked the series director Anubhav Sinha why he used ‘Shankar’ and ‘Bhola’ as the names of two of the hijackers and wrote, “Hi @anubhavsinha jb IC814 k sare Hijacker Muslims the toh tumne Web series me.” Why is Hijacker named Shankar and Bhola? (EP-4) And one is named Burger. Why are you so scared? You won’t succeed in trying to whitewash this.
Another user wrote: “Summary: ISI was not involved, Taliban are the good guys,” criticising its creators for allegedly manipulating the real incident.
A third user also questioned the director for naming ‘Shankar’ and ‘Bhola’ instead of the kidnappers and wrote, “Why did you name the terrorists Shankar and Bhola? @anubhavsinha.”
A user named Gappistan Radio wrote: “Oh now the terrorists are playing Antakshari with the passengers, one of whom was killed and another with his throat slit.”
Another user named Kunal Singh wrote: ”#Netflix India turns into a militant sympathiser of Pakistan spreading fake stories. The 5 guys who #IC814TheKandaharHijack were Ibrahim Akhtar (from Bahawalpur), Shahid Akhtar Sayeed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Mistry (from Karachi) and Shakir (from Sukkur). Netflix calls them sankar and bhola.”
