Out-of-favor Pakistani batsman Ahmed Shehzad has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for spending too much on the five mentors it has hired for the newly designed domestic tournament, the Champions Cup.

It is noteworthy that the Pakistan Cricket Board has brought in five mentors namely Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, Shaib MalikSaqlain Mushtaq and Sarfaraz Ahmed on board to prepare the players who will participate in the main tournament.

The PCB has reportedly given three-year contracts to each of the five mentors and they are paid approximately PKR 5 million (approximately USD 18,000) per month.

These reports have spread like wildfire and the PCB has come under intense scrutiny as the reported salary of the mentors is more than what the board offers to its Grade A players who are on central contracts. Grade A includes players like Babar AzamMohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, among others.

Shehzad took to ‘X’ earlier on Twitter to criticise the PCB’s decision and also announced that he will not be taking part in the Champions Cup.

“With a heavy heart, I have decided not to play in the National Cricket Champions Cup,” Shehzad’s post on X read. “The PCB’s favouritism, false promises and injustice towards the national players is unacceptable. At a time when Pakistan is battling inflation, poverty and huge electricity bills, the PCB is wasting Rs 5 crore on mentors for doing nothing and rewarding failed players of the current team who took Pakistan cricket to an all-time low.”

“It is even more disrespectful for the PCB to claim that it does not have ‘surgery instruments’, which is a huge disrespect towards the national players. As a Pakistani and a true cricket lover, I cannot support a system that does not value merit. I refuse to be a part of this failed system.”

Ahmed Shehzad accuses PCB of targeting Shaheen Shah Afridi

Shehzad believes the team management and board have made fast bowler Shaheen Afridi the scapegoat for Pakistan’s 10-wicket thrashing of Bangladesh.

He mentioned that the team management also needed to reflect on the performances of Abdullah Shafique, Saim Ayub and Babar Azam and improve them.
