Gujarat rains: Crocodile kills man in Orsang river in Vadodara

They have gone: As Gujarat While battling floods and waterfalls triggered by heavy rains, a man died in Dabhoi after a crocodile dragged him into the Orsang river in Vadodara.

The deceased, Amit Poonambhai Vasava, 30, was reportedly a labourer from Rajpura. Officials said, “Amit was trying to set a fishing net when the crocodile attacked him and dragged him into the river.”

Despite his continued efforts, Amit failed to escape as he slipped and was dragged underwater by the crocodile.

Several instances of crocodiles venturing into residential areas of Vadodara have been observed in the past few days. Vadodara is famous for its dense crocodile population, especially in the Vishwamitri River, which flows through the city. The marsh crocodile, also known as the swamp crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), is often seen resting on the river banks or even within the city limits.

News agency PTI reported that around 17,800 people were evacuated from flood-affected areas as heavy rains lashed parts of the state for the fifth consecutive day. Reports indicate that at least 28 people lost their lives due to the floods.

Minister Rushikesh Patel said more than 5,000 people have been evacuated in Vadodara, while 1,200 were rescued from floodwaters in the city.

On Thursday, residents criticised Vadodara MPs and councillors after they visited flood-affected areas. “Many citizens expressed disappointment and accused their representatives of failing to provide adequate support during the crisis. Some councillors ignored calls for help and their phones were switched off in some areas, further exacerbating public discontent,” said a resident.
