Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Saturday said bio-manufacturing will shape the future of the global economy and India is well positioned to lead this revolution due to its abundant biological resources.
“India has the opportunity to lead the next big revolution, which will be driven by biomanufacturing. While the West led the information technology revolution, India, with its vast and largely untapped biological resources, is poised to take the lead,” Singh said.
He said biomanufacturing offers solutions to global problems such as climate change, resource depletion, waste generation and pollution. It can help meet the growing demand for food and fuel while creating new jobs.
Singh said India currently imports most of its crude oil, but biomanufacturing, which uses biomass and carbon dioxide, can make the country more self-sufficient in fuel production. It could also support the dairy industry through non-dairy milk alternatives, promoting resource sustainability.
Last week, the Union Cabinet approved the BioE3 Policy (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) to promote high-performance biomanufacturing.
This policy seeks to boost research, technology development and commercialization by creating biomanufacturing centers, bioAI and biofoundries, and enable the production of everything from medicines to materials, and promote the use of advanced biotechnology processes in agriculture and manufacturing.
