In a recent development, more than 13,000 people across England will benefit from workplace health checks. This is being done to help and protect people from preventable diseases. The checks will begin on 30 August and employees will be able to carry them out at their workplace.
As part of the check-up, a series of data will be recorded using a questionnaire for each patient. The answers will be used to determine their risk of cardiovascular disease.
Public Health and Prevention Minister Andrew Gwynne told reporters: “We know that many deadly diseases are preventable if we seek help early. That’s why we’re working to improve access to treatment while also taking steps to address the preventable causes of cardiovascular disease.”
He added: “This innovative new programme is an important step towards community-centred healthcare and supporting economic productivity by improving health, shifting the focus from treatment to prevention, easing pressure on the NHS and helping people live well for longer.”
More than 16 million people are reportedly entitled to an NHS health check. However, data shows that only 40% of those who were invited completed it. This is especially true for men, who are less likely to receive early help.
David Hargroves, NHS National Clinical Director for Stroke, told reporters: “Health checks can save lives. They can stop people developing largely preventable conditions such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and liver disease. Councils are exploring new ways to drive uptake, focusing on individuals or communities most at risk and using proactive outreach programmes to reach those communities least likely to go to their GP.”
“However, more can be done and by partnering with local councils and employers we can ensure that more people get a health check and hopefully prevent illness down the road,” he added.
