According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as India enters the final stretch of the monsoon season, the country will experience above-normal rainfall, continuing the trend seen in August. In a virtual press conference, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra announced that rainfall in September is expected to be 109% above the long-term average of 167.9 millimetres (6.6 in).
Risks of flooding and extreme weather events
The IMD has also warned of possible risks associated with heavy rainfall. North-west regions of India, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh, are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. These areas are at risk of flooding, landslides, mudslides and landslides. “There could be spells of extremely heavy rainfall in these areas, which may lead to flooding. We need to remain cautious,” Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.
Low pressure systems and rainfall distribution
The IMD expects a low pressure system to develop over the Bay of Bengal every week during September, resulting in widespread rainfall across the country. However, certain regions, including the extreme northwest, parts of the southern peninsula, northern Bihar, northeast Uttar Pradesh and much of northeast India, may experience below-normal rainfall. These drier conditions could pose challenges to local agriculture and water resources in these areas.
