Ajinkya Rahane’s 192(102) keeps Leicestershire alive against Glamorgan | News

India’s Ajinkya Rahane in action

Experienced Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane compiled his 40th First-Class century (a wonderful 102 off 192 balls) as Leicestershire fought hard to avoid defeat against Glamorgan in their County Championship Division Two match here on Sunday.

Rahane, a veteran of 85 Tests and 90 ODIs, hit 13 fours and a six during his stay in the middle and was also involved in a vital 183-run stand for the fourth wicket with Australia’s Peter Handscomb, who was batting on 94 at lunch on the final day of the four-day game.

Leicestershire international pair Rahane and Handscomb came together with the aim of saving the game for themselves after Glamorgan’s Colin Ingram had posted a career-high unbeaten 257 at Sofia Gardens.

At stumps on the third night, Rahane was 47 not out and Handscomb unbeaten on 33, as Leicestershire finished on 144 for 3, trailing by 155, when bad light halted play with 21.2 scheduled overs remaining.

At lunch, Leicestershire were 271 for four and needed another 28 runs to get their opponents batting again in the match.

Both the Indian and the Australian were bowled by Glamorgan leg-spinner Mason Crane – two of his three dropped catches came from his own delivery – lapses that could stand in the way of the home side’s quest for victory.

This was after Glamorgan had declared on 550 for 9, with a lead of 299, Ingram unbeaten on a personal best of 257, Crane starting his day better with 49 runs to his name.

When Rahane, 36, came out to bat, Leicestershire were 74/3 but he combined with Handscomb to keep the team’s hopes of saving the game alive.

Rahane used the cut shot to score four consecutive goals and reach his first century for Leicestershire.

Rahane, who has scored 12 hundreds in Tests and three tons in ODIs, scored 42 off 67 balls in the first innings. Rahane eventually fell to Kiran Carlson.
