The official investigation into the helicopter crash in May this year that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and seven others revealed that the accident was caused by difficult weather and atmospheric conditions, Iranian state television reported on Sunday (September 1). The final report of the Supreme Joint Staff of the Armed Forces indicated that the main cause of the helicopter crash was the difficult weather conditions in the region in spring, state television reported.

The report also mentions the sudden appearance of a thick mass of fog rising upwards when the helicopter hit the mountain. According to the report, there were no signs of sabotage in the parts and systems.

Raisi was killed along with seven others, including his foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, in the accident in a remote mountainous area in northwestern Iran.

There was previously widespread speculation that Iran’s arch-rival Israel played a role in the untimely death of President Ebrahim Raisi after a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province, however an Israeli official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that it was not involved in the accident.

“It wasn’t us,” the Israeli official told Reuters. Israel and Iran have long been enemies, waging a “shadow war” for decades before it erupted with an exchange of drone and missile attacks earlier this year, threatening all-out war in the Middle East.
