Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, a hardliner who was seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed when his helicopter crashed in May in a mountainous region near the border with Azerbaijan.
“The main cause of the helicopter crash was the difficult weather conditions in the region,” the final report concluded, according to Iranian state television.
Thick fog caused the helicopter carrying Raisi and his companions to crash into the mountain, according to a report issued by a senior committee tasked by the Iranian military with investigating the incident.
A preliminary Iranian military report in May said no evidence of foul play or attack had been found during the investigation.
