Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi on Monday said he sees Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi as a future prime minister and claimed he has earned “this right” to take over the post when the party comes to power.

Singhvi praised him for leading by example and said Gandhi means what he says and says what he thinks.

Asked about Gandhi’s assumption of the role of leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and whether he sees him as a future prime minister, the four-time MP said, “Forget me, ask the BJP friends. With all this trolling they used to see, why is there admiration even if it is grudging admiration? Because they realise that (they) were satirising a sincere person, satirising a person who is direct, frank and conceptual, not sugar-coated, rhetorical, political, big-worded. Sincerity is coming out and people are realising it.”

“People are realising that he leads by example, literally. People are realising that he means business and speaks his mind. It is exactly the opposite of what the prime minister does. So I think this whole concept and equation is changing,” he told PTI.

Asked whether he sees Gandhi as a future prime minister, Singhvi said: “Whenever Congress comes (to power), ‘100 per cent’.”

The Congress spokesperson said he does not think anyone can deny Gandhi this right if the party comes to power as he earned it.

“When the Congress comes to power, it will have earned this right and can rightfully claim the post of prime minister,” Singhvi added.

Gandhi, who has served as an MP for five terms and currently represents the Rae Bareli constituency formerly held by his mother Sonia Gandhi, assumed the mantle of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha in June after the general elections.

She won in two constituencies but left vacant the Wayanad seat in Kerala, from where her sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest a by-election.

Gandhi entered the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2004, following his victory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.
