Mumbai’s largest slaughterhouse, the Deonar slaughterhouse, will remain closed for two days in September, following an order by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The closure will take place on September 4 and 7. This decision, issued by Mumbai Civic Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, comes in observance of the ‘Paryushan Parv’ of the Jain community.
“After taking into consideration various aspects of this issue, I have come to the conclusion that BMC will announce closure of one day of sacrifice during Paryushan Parva i.e. Bhadarva Sud Ekam every year, which falls on September 4 this year. Ganesh Chaturthi “This is one of the days on which the Deonar slaughterhouse will remain closed as per a 2015 decision. As it happens to fall on the same day as Paryushan Parv, the slaughterhouse will remain closed on September 7 as well,” the order said.

Gagrani also directed the concerned department to review the closure dates of the slaughterhouse and ensure that the total number of closure days does not exceed 15 per year. Last week, the Bombay High Court ordered civic bodies in Maharashtra Urgently consider and decide on representations made by a Jain public charity seeking a temporary ban on animal sacrifice and sale of meat during ‘Paryushan Parv’. The petition was filed by Sheth Motishaw Lalbaug Jain Charities, seeking directions to the BMC and civic bodies of Pune, Mira Bhayandar and Nashik to expedite their decision on the representation of the organisation.
Why was a ban on animal sacrifice requested?
The trust, which sought a ban on animal sacrifice and sale of meat from August 31 to September 7, highlighted several aspects of Jain belief, including ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence). The petition said that if animal sacrifice takes place during the Paryushan Parv, it would be detrimental to the cause of Jainism. A division bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar said it sees no impediment in directing civic bodies to decide the representation made by the trust.
