The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is planning to organise the first ever brainstorming session on sickle cell disease research over two days.

Top scientists and medical experts from across the country will participate in the Chintan Shivir to be held from 5-6 September 2024.

According to sources, the aim of organising the brainstorming session is to identify affordable research, diagnosis and treatment for sickle cell disease. “We want to identify the research properties that can be adopted in sickle cell disease and the existing scenarios with respect to screening, diagnosis, treatment, preventive measures and awareness,” sources said.

Over two days, the panel discussion will have six different sessions such as Patient Perspectives Understanding Patients Living with SCD and Their Needs, Strategic Open Brainstorming, Screening Methods and Strategies, Point-of-Care Prenatal and Newborn Screening, Implementation Research Optimizing National SCD Mission Coverage and Services, Treatment Strategies, Current Approaches and Advances, Areas for Future Research, Prevention Strategies, Interventions for Stigma Reduction and Improving Quality of Life of Patients with SCD, Areas for Future Research.

The Prime Minister also launched the National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission on 1st July 2023 at Shahdil, Madhya Pradesh.

This programme is being carried out on a three-year mission to carry out detection, prevention and treatment of sickle cell anaemia in tribal areas, states and union territories of India.
