Paris 2024 Paralympics: Dharambir takes gold in men’s F51 mace throw event

Paris 2024 Paralympics: India’s medal tally at the Paris Paralympics has risen to 24, its best ever. The country is now ranked 13th among participating nations in international multi-sport events after Dharambir won gold in the men’s F51 mace throw event while Pranav Soorma bagged silver.

Dharambir’s mentor, the third Indian in the fray, Amit Kumar Saroha, a silver medallist at the 2017 world championships, finished last with his best throw of 23.96 metres. Filip Graovac of Serbia won bronze with a best throw of 34.18 metres in his second attempt.

Dharambir’s win marks a historic double podium finish for India, making him only the second Indian to win gold at the 2024 Summer Games and India’s first gold medal in the men’s club throw F51 event at the Paris Paralympics. The 35-year-old from Sonipat registered the victory with a throw of 34.92 metres in his fifth attempt.

Dharambir had previously claimed a silver medal at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou earlier in 2022. For his exceptional achievements in national and international competitions.In 2022, he received the Bhim Award, the most prestigious sports award given by the Government of Haryana.

At the 2016 Rio Paralympics, Dharambir finished ninth and placed eighth at the Tokyo Paralympics.
