Why is Ganesh Utsav celebrated for 10 days?
It is believed that Lord Ganesha was asked by Sage Vyasa to write the Mahabharata. Lord Ganesha wrote continuously for 10 days without stopping. Due to constant writing at one place, dust and dirt accumulated on his body. On the tenth day, Ganesha took a bath in the Saraswati River to cleanse the accumulated dust and dirt. Since then, the immersion of the Ganesha idol is performed on the tenth day of Ganesh Utsav.
Another belief is that during these 10 days, Lord Ganesha travels around the Earth, where his devotees welcome him and invite him into their homes. During this period, idols of Ganesha are installed in homes and public places. The festival concludes on the tenth day, known as Anant Chaturdashi, when the idol is immersed and devotees bid farewell, seeking his blessings for their return the following year.
How did Lord Ganesha come into being?
Lord Ganesha was created from the earth of Goddess Parvati’s body. She breathed life into the statue and assigned Ganesha the task of guarding her chamber. When Lord Shiva tried to enter the chamber, Ganesha, unaware of his identity, blocked his way. Angry, Shiva cut off Ganesha’s head. Distraught, Parvati pleaded with Shiva to bring her son back to life. Shiva then replaced Ganesha’s head with that of an elephant, granting him a new lease on life.
