Star Health and Allied Insurance, a health insurance company, has introduced a Braille insurance policy, the company said in a statement. This initiative aims to empower visually impaired people in India by enabling them to access health insurance information independently, the company added.
The newly launched “Special Care Gold” policy offers customized health coverage for people with disabilities.
The policy is designed to address the specific needs of people with disabilities of 40 per cent or more, including physical, sensory or cognitive disabilities. The release cites a 2022 study by the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, which estimated that visual impairment results in an economic loss of Rs 646 billion in productivity.
Star Health has also embarked on a financial inclusion drive, offering visually impaired people the opportunity to become health insurance agents.
This initiative focuses on providing skills and training to this marginalized group, enabling them to generate income while working remotely.
“Our aim is to make health insurance accessible to all, including the 34 million visually impaired people in India. This initiative aligns with IRDAI’s vision of ‘Insurance for All’, which supports both health coverage and financial empowerment,” said Anand Roy, MD & CEO, Star Health Insurance.
Star Health Braille Policy
Developed in collaboration with the National Association of the Blind (NAB), the Braille policy includes essential medical treatments and support services for people with disabilities, offering comprehensive coverage that is often unavailable to this community.
At the launch event, Srikanth Bolla, co-founder of Bollant Industries, expressed his support. “Special Care Gold is not just an insurance policy; it is a step towards true inclusion,” he said.
In an effort to achieve inclusion, Bolla, a visually impaired entrepreneur, has obtained a licensed health insurance agent from Star Health. The initiative also includes fully funded exam preparation for new agents, with audio training and notary assistance.
A dedicated hotline will also provide ongoing support to officers with disabilities.
