He Maharashtra The government has exempted vehicles that circulate through Konkan Routes from the payment of tolls or road taxes between September 5 and 19 in view of the Ganesha Festivalfrom Saturday. The Public Works Department (PWD) issued a notification to this effect on Wednesday.
The toll waiver will be applicable from September 5 to 19 only for Konkan-bound vehicles plying on Mumbai-Bengaluru and Mumbai-Goa national highways and state highways. Vehicles must obtain a pass issued by the RTO officials and the traffic police department to avail the waiver on payment of road tax, the notification said.
The PWD also issued a standard pass format with its official notification. The pass document is valid for the return journey of the vehicle and serves as a qualifying document for exemption from payment of toll, it said.
Thousands of people from Bombay and neighbouring regions travel to their hometowns in the coastal Konkan region to celebrate the Ganesh Chaturthi festival every year. Several state-run and private buses are expected to ferry Konkan-bound passengers ahead of the festival from Mumbai alone.
Politicians and various organisations also arrange private buses to facilitate the travel of Ganesh devotees. The sharp increase in vehicular traffic necessitates measures to ease congestion, prompting the state government to announce toll waivers to avoid impediments to the flow of traffic.
