Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: Importance of Visarjan
Ganesh Visarjan emphasizes the passage of time and the change of life by depicting the cycle of birth and death. The statue of Lord Ganesha immersed in water symbolizes the soul’s journey to Moksha, where it unites with the Infinite. Though devotees bid farewell to the statue, the essence of Ganesha lives on and he promises to return. Three phases make up the ritual: Yathasthan (farewell), Puja (worship) and Avahan (invocation). Avahan is marked by the placement of the deity on a raised platform with a Kalash, Puja and a courteous ending by Yathasthan. Ganesh Visarjan, observed with devotion and reflection, is a profound reminder of the transitory nature of life.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: Visarjan Rituals
- During the last puja, the family gathers in front of the idol and makes offerings like modaks, ladoos, incense sticks, flowers and diyas.
- Families pray and a camphor candle is waved to mark the end of the puja.
- After giving namaskar to the idol, the head of the family sprinkles turmeric rice, or Akshad, on it.
- The farewell begins when the eldest male touches and moves the idol.
- The family serves curd, sweets and a packet of rice and cereal wrapped in red cloth before leaving.
- For one final round, the idol is carried around the house by a designated male member.
- The family heads to the water body, where they shout Ganesh’s names and slogans as they gently immerse the idol.
