Modi in Singapore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a unique appearance before global business leaders, invited them to invest in Kashi (Varanasi), his parliamentary constituency, while highlighting one of the city’s most famous delicacies – Banarasi paan. Speaking at the Business Leaders Summit in Singapore on Thursday, PM Modi referred to the traditional Indian delicacy made from betel leaves, famous for its association with Varanasi, to add a personal and cultural touch to his call for investment in the historic city.
“Whenever you talk about paan in India, it is incomplete without mentioning Varanasi. I am an MP from Varanasi,” PM Modi said, drawing a connection between the city’s rich cultural heritage and its potential as an investment hub. On a lighter note, he added, “If you want to enjoy eating paan, then you should invest in Kashi.”
Banarasi paan, synonymous with the holy Hindu city of Varanasi, holds a special place in Indian culture and is often featured at weddings and celebrations. Its fame has spread to popular culture, including Bollywood, where it has been referenced in songs and films, further enriching its legacy.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came as part of a broader message to Singapore’s business leaders and CEOs, in which he highlighted ongoing reforms in India aimed at boosting investment and innovation. Modi emphasised the deepening economic ties between India and Singapore, particularly with the upcoming inauguration of an Invest India Office in Singapore, which will help Singaporean investors explore opportunities in India.

During his visit, the Prime Minister also met Goh Chok Tong, Emeritus Minister and former Prime Minister of Singapore. Modi highlighted the value of their conversation, saying, “We had extensive discussions on ways to give impetus to the friendship between India and Singapore. Your experience and expertise are very valuable.”
