A 14-year-old Georgia student has been charged with making threats against a school just hours after the mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, police confirmed Thursday. The unidentified teen is being held at the Regional Juvenile Detention Center on charges of terroristic threats and disrupting the operation of a public school, the Gainesville Police Department announced.
The student’s arrest came hours after a 14-year-old student shot and killed four people at Apalachee High School. More than nine people were injured, authorities said Wednesday. Gainesville is just over 25 miles from Winder.
“In light of the recent tragedy in neighboring Barrow County, many jurisdictions have had to deal with hoaxes or false information circulating,” the Gainesville Police Department said. However, authorities confirmed there was no connection between the two incidents.
“Our primary goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff,” said Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish. “We are devastated by the heinous attack at Apalachee High School in our neighboring community. Whether a hoax or not, we will actively investigate every threat or potential action against any school or student.”
The suspect in the Apalachee shooting The 14-year-old student was charged with four counts of felony murder. He was taken to Gainesville RYDC. Additional charges are expected. His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday. The 14-year-old student was investigated by the FBI last year for allegedly making school shooting threats online, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
