The unique sleeping routine of a Japanese man: A Japanese man has gone viral for his claims that he has been sleeping just 30 minutes each day to double his life expectancy. The man named Daisuke Hori claimed that he has over-slept by resting for just half an hour, instead of the recommended time of at least 7 or 8 hours. Hori, a 40-year-old businessman from Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan, claims that he has trained his body and mind to function effectively on very little sleep, which he believes has greatly improved his work efficiency.

Hori emphasizes that sleep quality is more crucial than sleep duration to maintaining concentration. In 2016, he founded the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association, where he teaches classes on sleep and health. So far, he has taught more than 2,100 students how to become short sleepers by following his unique sleep regimen, according to various reports.

According to the South China Morning Post, Hori began cutting back on his sleep more than a decade ago to increase his waking hours. Over time, he managed to reduce his sleep to just 30 to 45 minutes per day.

Hori’s reasoning behind his unusual sleeping pattern is intriguing. He argues that sleep quality is more important than quantity. Using the example of doctors and firefighters, he noted that these professionals often rest for short periods but still manage to work efficiently.

To stay alert and combat fatigue, Hori relies on physical exercise and drinks coffee an hour before meals. For nearly 12 years, he has drastically limited the amount of sleep in his daily routine.

Research published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that people who sleep too little or too much tend to age mentally by about two years, compared to those who sleep seven to eight hours a night, Times of India reported.

Chronic lack of sleep can significantly impact health. While sleep needs vary from person to person, most adults need between 7 and 9 hours per night to function optimally. Getting less sleep than necessary on a regular basis can lead to numerous physical and mental health problems.

Lack of sleep also negatively affects cognitive functions such as memory and decision-making. Long-term sleep deprivation can contribute to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, as well as reducing productivity and quality of life. Those who do not get enough rest often have difficulty concentrating and the risk of accidents increases due to decreased alertness.
