Amid the MeToo row in Kerala, actress Sanjjanaa Galrani on Thursday met Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and submitted a memorandum to form an association to ensure the safety of those working in the Kannada film industry. A video shared by news agency ANI in which the actress can be seen submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister. Recently, the Malayalam film industry was in the news for all the wrong reasons after the Hema Committee report was released, which shed light on the alleged harassment and exploitation of women professionals in the Malayalam film industry.

In her memorandum submitted to the Karnataka CM, state Home Minister Gangadharaiah Parmeshwar, Deputy CM DK Shivkumar and Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, she wrote, “I, Sanjjanaa Galrani, the founder, humbly request that some important safety measures be initiated which should be compulsorily taken for the prevention of exploitation of women in the film industry and leading to formation of a new post of woman also to be added as the head of the artists’ association, especially to cater to the needs and problems of women artists.”

“A women artists’ association headed by women from the film industry should be formed and be active as an extension of the existing artists’ association to educate women about their basic rights as actresses,” she added.

”After observing a number of episodes of exploitation of women happening in other film industries, I felt the need to write this particular letter to all of you to maintain the serenity of the ‘Namma Kannada Industry’ for that reason, to prevent our ‘Kannada Film Industry’ from getting into such an embarrassing situation and mainly to protect our KFI from any such black mark in future. I want to form SWAA by taking the valuable opinion of our respectful Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce, Producers Association, Directors Association, Technicians Association and Artists Association, hence, we are addressing this letter to all of you and also most importantly, we will seek the mentorship of the Hon’ble Government of Karnataka to form SWAA,” she wrote further requesting the Karanataka government.
