Colin GrayThe father of the 14-year-old suspect in the mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Windsor, near Atlanta, Georgia, was arrested Thursday on several charges, including involuntary manslaughter.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said in a social media post that Gray was arrested and charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children.
He was arrested for “knowingly allowing” his son “to possess a weapon,” the GBI director said at a news conference Thursday.
Authorities have charged the 14-year-old suspect as an adult with murder in Wednesday’s shootings. He is accused of using a semi-automatic assault rifle in the attack, which left two students and two teachers dead and nine others wounded.
“He knows the severity of guns and what they can do, and how to use them and not use them,” Colin Gray said of his son, according to an Associated Press report citing a transcript obtained from the sheriff’s office.
Last year, a sheriff’s investigator from neighboring Jackson County interviewed the suspect, during which he also questioned Colin Gray. Gray then revealed that the suspect had struggled with his parents’ separation and was often bullied at school.
The teenager frequently shot guns and hunted with his father, who photographed him with deer blood on his cheeks.
The teen denied threatening to carry out a school shooting when authorities interviewed him last year about a threatening social media post, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office report.
