iPhone 16 launch event on September 9: Apple AirPods lineup expected in 2024 | Tech News

AirPods Max and AirPods 3

Apple is expected to refresh the existing AirPods lineup by replacing previous-generation models with two new standard fourth-generation AirPods models. At the “It’s Glowtime” launch event for the iPhone 16 series, the company could unveil a regular AirPods 4 and an entry-level model to replace the second- and third-generation AirPods in Apple’s lineup. We could also see a new AirPods Max model of earbuds at this year’s event.

This is what the Apple AirPods line could look like after September 9

Apple AirPods 4: What to expect

Apple will likely launch not one, but two new AirPods 4 models alongside the iPhone 16 series, as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported. The report suggested that Apple will replace the AirPods 2 with an entry-level AirPods 4 variant, featuring a modern design and improved audio capabilities. The AirPods 2 were launched in 2019 and feature a similar dated design to the original AirPods. Similarly, Apple could replace 2021’s AirPods 3 with a higher-end AirPods 4 variant.

Both new AirPods models are expected to feature a similar design, however, Apple could rebrand these devices. The high-end model is expected to retain the AirPods 4 label, while the entry-level model could be renamed to “AirPods Lite.”

Both models are expected to feature new drivers for improved audio, but active noise cancellation (ANC) technology will likely be limited to the higher-priced model. The entry-level AirPods could also lack wireless charging functionality, but will likely have a USB-C port for charging, similar to their more expensive counterpart.

AirPods Max 2: What to expect

At the iPhone 16 launch event, Apple could unveil the first major update to its earbuds, the AirPods Max. Apple could bring some of the audio features it offers on its AirPods Pro to the AirPods Max, given that the earbuds are already priced higher than the AirPods Pro.

The AirPods Max 2 are expected to be equipped with the H2 chip currently used in the AirPods Pro 2 model. With increased processing power, Apple could bring features like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and more to the AirPods Max.

The Adaptive Audio feature dynamically switches between different active noise cancellation (ANC) modes depending on the environment. Meanwhile, the Conversation Recognition feature detects an ongoing conversation and lowers the music volume while isolating the voice for greater clarity. Other notable features that could be included in the new model include head shake gestures to respond to Siri, voice isolation on phone calls, custom spatial audio, and more.

No major aesthetic changes are expected for the second-generation AirPods Max, but Apple could offer new color options. Additionally, Apple could equip the new AirPods Max with a USB-C port.

New AirPods Pro?

While Apple is likely to refresh the AirPods line this year, it is not expected to release a new high-end model, the AirPods Pro. The next generation of AirPods Pro is expected to launch in 2025, and not much is known about what improvements it will offer. However, Apple is likely to include a new H3 processor for better audio processing and more.
