Piyush Goyal says India is looking to boost tourism ties with Mediterranean countries

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, while addressing the CII India-Mediterranean Business Conclave 2024, suggested that India could set up a task force to take forward the prospects of increasing tourism with Mediterranean countries.

Speaking at the Conclave, Goyal said India offers wonderful tourism opportunities with its diverse landscapes and varied seasons. He added that people-to-people connections will eventually transcend borders, as will cooperation in defence and manufacturing.

Calling for development of ports, shipbuilding, ship ownership and marine engineering as part of India-Mediterranean relationship, he noted that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) will enhance India’s maritime security and reduce dependence on a few routes that can be detrimental to the maritime capability of the world’s largest democracy.

He highlighted Mediterranean cruises and recalled that when someone talks about the region, wonderful stories about the Greek islands come to mind. He expressed his gratitude to the Mediterranean countries for providing passage to 80% of world trade.

Goyal also highlighted the possibility of greater participation in the telecom sector and agricultural products, and highlighted the good relations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi enjoys with Mediterranean leaders and said that this should go beyond business and be taken to the next level. Twelve countries and territories in Southern Europe, seven in Western Asia and five in Northern Africa surround the Mediterranean basin.
