Monfalcone, a town in northern Italy, has apparently banned the playing of cricket. cricket in the city could lead to fines of ₹9,325 (100 euros).
The BBC spoke to a group of Bangladeshi friends who were playing cricket in the hot Italian sun on a small concrete patch near Trieste airport. They avoided playing in Monfalcone because of an apparent ban imposed by the mayor, the group said.
Mayor Anna Maria Cisint, affiliated with a right-wing political party, won her post largely because of her strong anti-immigration stance. Since then, she has focused on protecting her community and defending Christian traditions.
Speaking to the BBC, she expressed concern that her heritage was being forgotten and that changes were leading to a decline in values.
“There is a very strong process of Islamic fundamentalism here. A culture where women “They are treated very badly and oppressed by men,” she said.
The ban on cricket in Monfalcone highlights underlying conflicts in the town, according to the BBC. Monfalcone has a population of more than 30,000. About a third of residents are foreign nationals. Many of them are Bangladeshi Muslims who first emigrated in the late 1990s in search of work, the publication said.
During her two terms as mayor, Cisint made decisions that affected the local Bangladeshi community, such as removing benches from the town square where they used to gather.
Why ban cricket?
Regarding her prohibition As for cricket, Mayor Cisint argues that there is no space or funds for a new pitch. She also mentioned safety concerns with cricket balls. Mayor Cisint said she would not allow Bangladeshis to play cricket in Monfalcone.
“They have given nothing to this town, to our community. Zero. They are free to go play cricket anywhere else… outside of Monfalcone,” he told the publication.
