Pune Metro bows to commuters’ demands, renames popular stations

Responding to growing demands from commuters, several stations on the Pune Metro network will be renamed in the next 10 to 15 days. According to a senior Maha Metro official, the renaming process is in its final stages and a formal notification is expected soon.

The name change comes after a long debate, particularly around the Bhosari station on Corridor One in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Though called Bhosari, the station is actually located 5 kilometres away at Nashik Phata. This discrepancy has led to considerable confusion among passengers. The Financial Express reports that Maha Metro is planning to rename the station as “Nashik Phata” to reflect its actual location.

Another station facing criticism is Budhwar Peth, which has long been associated with Pune’s red-light district. In response to feedback from commuters, Maha Metro will rename this station as “Kasba Peth,” a change aimed at distancing it from unwanted associations. Also, Mangalwar Peth station will be renamed “RTO” as it is located close to the Regional Transport Office (RTO), making it more intuitive for commuters.

These changes follow a similar renaming process that saw the Civil Court station become the “District Court” last month following requests from the legal community.
