Tamil Nadu school principal transferred after row over spiritual awakening classes, details here | Education

On Friday, the principal of Ashok Nagar Girls’ Higher Secondary School, R. Thamilarasi, was transferred to Kovilpathagai Government Higher Secondary School in Thiruvallur district.

After a video of the alleged spiritual session conducted by the Paramporul Foundation (NGO) at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar went viral on social media, DMK supporters have raised questions with the state government and the education department.

Anbil Mahesh, the state school education minister, said a committee has been formed to investigate who gave permission for the event and based on the facts, action will be taken in a day or two.

“With the help of the principal secretary of our department, we have formed a committee. We will conduct an inquiry into who is involved in this, how it happened and who gave permission. Everything will be investigated. Based on that, we will take action in a day or two,” the minister said.

Cadres of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students Federation of India (SFI) also staged a protest against the spiritual session. Director of Education, School Education Department, S. Mars, met the protesters and assured that strict action will be taken in connection with the incident.

Earlier, Prime Minister MK Stalin also responded to criticism by saying that state textbooks contain the best scientific ideas for students.

“Our high-quality textbooks contain the best scientific ideas that students need to know. Teachers themselves can bring out the best ideas needed to face future challenges with confidence and sharpen knowledge. The School Education Department will take steps to provide the necessary innovative training and social education with appropriate experts and academicians from the department,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X.

“I have directed the formulation and publication of new guidelines for regulating various programmes in schools in the state so that all our students, who are the future generation of Tamil Nadu, acquire scientific and progressive ideas and lifestyles. Individual progress, ethical living and sound ideas for social development must be inculcated in the hearts of students. For the last three years, I have consistently emphasised the importance of education and the need to develop scientific thinking at numerous events,” the Chief Minister added.
